Thinus Robbetze: Founding Director at Oceania Public Accountants

Thinus Robbetze, the founding director of Oceania Public Accountants, has infused the firm with a down-to-earth and approachable philosophy since its inception in 2017.

With a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Finance, from North West University Potchefstroom, Thinus’ journey into accounting began at age eight. Inspired by his father, a fellow accountant, he made a childhood vow to follow in his footsteps—a promise he’s kept with pride.

Thinus’ years at university taught him not just about the intricacies of accounting, but also about mastering life skills— time management, attention to details, problem solving, conflict management & people skills, and a bonus skill – fitting a lot of luggage into a small car!

Prior to establishing Oceania Public Accountants, Thinus developed his public practice accounting skills and expertise in both Australian and South African firms. After moving to Australia with his wife Cornelia in 2012, Thinus quickly ascertained the need for a firm that prioritised people over profits, leading him to launch Oceania Public Accountants in 2017. Under Thinus’ guidance, Oceania has evolved from a ‘one-man-band’ into a thriving team, with Thinus enjoying the opportunities to mentor his team as the business grows.

Thinus’ expertise is backed by his status as a Registered Tax Agent and Public Accountant, with credentials proudly earned from the Tax Practitioners Board and the Institute of Public Accountants.

In today’s complex financial landscape, Thinus sees a clear path for Oceania Public Accountants: providing straightforward, actionable advice to business owners. Clients can trust him to manage the intricacies of their accounting and taxation matters, ensuring they stay informed every step of the way.

Accounting for Thinus is more than a profession—it’s a legacy. For over fifty years, his family has demystified accounting for people from all walks of life, a tradition he carries on with dedication.

His commitment goes beyond financial statements. Thinus is deeply involved in charitable work, particularly focused on supporting children and alleviating poverty through community organisations.

Thinus is devoted to his family and is actively involved in raising his children to become the best humans they can possibly be. He does find a little time for R&R here and there, and you’ll find him cheering at a rugby match, unwinding on the golf course, or enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends.

Thinus offers this guidance to those who are just beginning their business journey:

“It may be a bit of a cliché, but the outset of your business venture will demand early starts and late finishes, tackling the tasks that others may avoid.

Laying a solid foundation is just the start; the next step is to assemble a team whose skills complement your own. Delegate the areas where you’re less skilled and trust your team to manage those responsibilities.

Staying informed is crucial—you don’t have to master every detail, but you should have a working knowledge of all aspects of your business.

Take accounting and taxation, for instance—if they aren’t your forte, that’s where I come in. I’ll handle those complexities for you, ensuring you remain well-informed and on track to achieve your broader business ambitions.”
